When starch is released from white potatoes they turn brown. This is called oxidation. Covering shredded or diced potatoes with cold water will keep them from turning brown.

Tossing fruit into a paper bag will help it ripen faster, this is due to the effects of the ethylene gas in the fruits.

Chilling plastic wrap will help it roll off easier. If you wrap the end of bananas with plastic wrap, they will stay fresher longer. The plastic blocks the ethylene gases from releasing out of the stem.
