Collapse ▲As Spring approaches, there are many opportunities for families to get outside and explore the world around them and you don’t have to go far beyond your backyard to do it. 4-H can offer resources that can assist in helping you learn about nature. The 4-H Healthy-Living Activity Guide has a section on ways to camp in your backyard and the 4-H Inspire Kids to Do Activity Guide has several activities involving categorizing insects and wildlife. These activity guides can be found on the National 4-H website at 4H.org under the “Parents” tab.
One simple way to learn outside is to use your phone and download the iNaturalist App. The premise of using iNaturalist is to take pictures of your observations outdoors, upload them online, and connect with experts who can tell you what you found. You are contributing to the scientific community by simply documenting what you see in your backyard. There are over 1 million users of iNaturalist and over 33 million observations to date. By going to the iNaturalist website at iNaturalist.org, you can search what species have been found throughout the entire world. Its a really fun way to incorporate a little environmental science into your day.
This summer, the Union County 4-H Foundation is offering a camp that explorers nature in a fun and interactive environment called Beyond the Backyard. The Master Gardner℠ volunteers of Union County partner with us to bring in activities related to bugs, wildlife, reptiles, local foods and more. Campers will go on nature hikes and even take a field trip to Reed Gold Mine where they will have a chance to pan for gold and learn about the history of the mine. Registration for this camp and the other Summer Fun camps we are offering is now open on Eventbrite.
If you are interested in learning more about our Summer Fun program, contact the local 4-H office at 704.283.3740 or 704.283.3735. We can also be reached via email at union4hnc@gmail.com.
