Due to COVID 19, regretfully, the 65th Annual Farm City Banquet will not take place this year in the same format as our community has grown to know & love. This will be the first year since 1955 that the popular community event is taking a hiatus from the in-person traditional meal, awards banquet, music, and fellowship that has normally taken place each year during the first Thursday of November.

However, NC State Cooperative Extension and Watauga Cooperative Extension have planned a number of virtual events that can be accessed during November to continue the longstanding tradition of Farm City. Additionally, the October issue of High Country Magazine features a 13-page spread on the history of Watauga County’s Farm City celebration throughout the past six and a half decades. Copies of High County Magazine can be found at many retail outlets in town.

A history of the Farm City Banquet in Watauga County is featured in the October/November issue of High County Magazine. Story by Nathan Hamm.

However, despite this year’s many challenges, we ARE going to be recognizing this years farmers, community leaders, youth, supporting businesses, and volunteers that have persevered in 2020 to build our agricultural economy and support our community even during these trying times. During Farm City week, leading up to Thanksgiving, awardees will be recognized on our Watauga Extension Facebook page and website. Check this site and our Facebook page to see who the winners are for: Christmas Tree Grower of the Year, Cattleman of the Year, Youth in Agriculture, Woman in Agriculture, the L.E. Tuckwiller Award, and Conservation Farm Family of the Year, among others.
