FDA Webinar on Pet Food Banner Image

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) will host a virtual listening session on the FDA’s oversight of pet food.

Date: September 24, 2021
Time: 1–4:30 p.m. EST

What Will the Program Cover?

The FDA is responsible for regulating animal food products. This covers ingredients, as well as the manufacturing and labeling of livestock and poultry feed, and pet food (including pet treats). Pet food includes food and treats for:

  • dogs,
  • cats, and
  • other companion species, such as gerbils, hamsters, snakes, lizards, ornamental fish, and birds.

This program will provide listeners with information on the oversight of pet food.

From the FDA:
There is no requirement that pet food products have pre-market approval by the FDA. However, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) requires that food for animals, like food for humans, is safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, free of harmful substances, and truthfully labeled.

For more information about FDA’s oversight or regulation of pet food products, visit FDA’s Regulation of Pet Food page.
