Collapse ▲During the holiday season, you may hear the ringing of bells to donate to the Salvation Army while shopping or see toy or coat drives at community buildings. This time of year simply invites people to give to others. Have you ever thought about why it is important to give to others? Here are some reasons.
1- Giving promotes positive values. It’s important to teach youth the power of generosity, sharing, and helping others at a young age. Giving as a family can help children form a habit of serving throughout their lives.
2- Giving promotes a sense of gratitude for both the giver and receiver. Research shows us that gratitude is an important component of our happiness, health, and wellbeing. On the receiving end, we can be grateful that someone would take the time to give to us. On the giving end, we can be grateful for the means and ability to give to others.
3- Giving inspires others to give. Many times, those who have been on the receiving end of generosity will pay it forward to someone else.
I encourage you to find a passion that you are interested in and find organizations you can give to. If you care about animals maybe think about donating toys or food to an animal shelter. If you want to make sure children get holiday presents this season, maybe sponsor a child and fulfill their holiday present list. Another way to give back to the community is through 4-H. We are always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. This could include setting up at 4-H events to serving as judges for competitions or even leading club meetings. 4-H is a wonderful way to impact and serve youth. If you are interested in volunteering with 4-H or donating to 4-H, contact our office at 704-283-3740 or 704-283-3735. No matter how small the gift is, you have the power to touch another person’s life with your time, money, or kind words. It all makes a difference.
