Cherokee County 4-H in partnership with the Cherokee County Schools 21st Century Learning Centers Summer Camp Program and Cherokee County Schools Summer Fun Programs had a great time providing programs to students involved in both programs as well as 4-H curriculum to the classroom directors in both programs. The 4-H curriculum helped provide hands on “learn by doing” activities to the participants in the programs. Cherokee County Schools Summer Fun program was held at Murphy Elementary School. The Cherokee County Schools 21st Century Learning Centers Summer Camp Program had 3 locations at schools in Ranger, Murphy, and Andrews.

During the 4-H time with the 21st Century Program, we concentrated on fun outdoor activities like fishing and camping. We spent the last days of camp fishing at a local pond owned by Wayne and Arleene Ward. The students caught fish and a student from each of the sites that caught the most fish for the day won a new fishing rod and reel from Cherokee County 4-H. They also played games and learned about things they needed for camping.

With the Cherokee County 4-H Agent, the Cherokee County Schools Summer Fun program made bread in a bag to take home and enjoy, as well as, animal tracks in clay that they could paint once they hardened. The classroom directors also did 4-H activities like making smoothies, making pine cone bird feeders, making candy and decorating cupcakes, making ice cream in a bag, building gumdrop towers and painting flower pots and planting flower seeds.
