4-H Grows Here.
Do you love nature, wildlife and being outdoors? Are you interested in learning more about wildlife habitat management? Any youth in Yancey County, ages 8-18 are invited to attend the Yancey County 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) Interest Meeting: Monday, November 7, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the Yancey County Senior Center (503 Medical Campus Drive, Burnsville, NC 28714). Please RSVP by calling or emailing Jordan English if you think you’ll attend (jordan_english@ncsu.edu or 828-682-6186).

The 4-H WHEP Group will learn about North Carolina wildlife, including common wildlife species, their habitat needs, and how to asses and create management plans for wildlife habitat. The WHEP program includes outdoor and classroom hands-on learning activities, including fun field trips to bring the learning to life! The group is limited to TWELVE participants; teams will be selected by application following the interest meeting.

The group will meet the following dates from 3:30–5 p.m. at the Yancey Cooperative Extension office unless otherwise noted. Participants are expected to attend at least 4 of the 5 meetings prior to the State Contest.

  • November 7, 2022 6:00 p.m.  – Interest Meeting, required to attend with parent/guardian @ Yancey County Senior Center (503 Medical Campus Drive, Burnsville, NC 28714).
  • December 5, 2022 3:30-5 p.m.
  • January 16, 2023 3:30-5 p.m.
  • February 20, 2023 3:30-5 p.m.
  • March 20, 2023 3:30-5 p.m.
  • April 3, 2023 3:30-5 p.m.
  • April 2023, date TBA – Required to attend State 4-H WHEP Contest (all-day event), location TBA
