In honor and celebration of Black History Month, we commemorate a woman who made lasting impacts on EFNEP in North Carolina – Minnie Miller Brown.
Minnie Miller Brown (1922–1995) was the first state EFNEP
Coordinator in North Carolina. She served in that role from 1967
until her retirement in 1981. Prior to joining NC State University in
1967, Minnie provided leadership for the Home Demonstration Work
through North Carolina A&T State University.
Minnie earned her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics at Bennett College
and her master’s degree at Cornell in 1955. In 1989, Minnie received
an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Brown was passionate about helping people who were most in
need and in this capacity, she stands as one of the nation’s brightest
lights. She was recognized nationally as a leader among EFNEP state
coordinators. She inspired EFNEP staff with a vision for helping improve
conditions for a neglected audience, the rural poor families and youth
in North Carolina.
Dr. Brown is remembered with affection for her passion and
commitment to EFNEP. On her retirement, a special endowment
was established within the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation of
the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University to
provide an annual award for the outstanding EFNEP Educator of the
year. The first Minnie Miller Brown Award was presented in 1982 and is still awarded to EFNEP Educators to this day.
