The Union County Food Innovation Center is moving from vision to reality following a groundbreaking celebration held March 31, 2026. The project marks a significant investment in the future of agriculture and food-based entrepreneurship in Union County.
Located on Julia May Baker Road in Wingate, the 25,000-square-foot facility will serve as a hub for food production, distribution, and business development. Formerly known as the Building Agricultural Resources and Nutrition (BARN) project, the center reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the local food system and expanding opportunities for residents.
Designed to support both agricultural producers and entrepreneurs, the Food Innovation Center will feature a commercial kitchen and professional workspace for licensed businesses. The facility will provide access to equipment and infrastructure for those who are not yet positioned to invest in a brick-and-mortar location, helping bring new food products to market and supporting business growth.
Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months, with an anticipated opening in summer 2027.
N.C. Cooperative Extension - Union County Center, in partnership with Union County Government, Wingate University, and Town of Wingate, will provide research-based education, technical assistance, and programming within the facility. These efforts will support local farmers, food producers, and residents interested in starting or expanding food-based businesses.
“The Food Innovation Center represents the continued growth and evolution of agriculture in Union County,” said Andrew Baucom, Director of N.C. Cooperative Extension, Union County. “This facility will create new opportunities for local producers and entrepreneurs by providing access to the resources and support needed to succeed.”
