That's where 4-H stands comes in.
At Union County 4-H, we don’t just keep kids busy. We grow young people into thriving and "Beyond Ready" adults, equipping them with leadership skills, resilience, and a sense of purpose that lasts long after the season ends or the club wraps up. And the best part? 4-H runs year-round!
And the best part is that 4-H isn't something youth have to choose; instead of sports or school clubs, they can do all of them. Many of our 4-H'ers are also student-athletes, FFA members, band students, drama club participants, and more. What makes 4-H unique is that it complements those experiences while offering additional leadership, service, and real-world readiness.
The 2023 National 4-H Index Study, which surveyed nearly 4,000 youth across 19 states, confirmed what we've seen firsthand: 4-H youth aren’t just participating—they’re thriving.
So, What Makes 4-H Different?
1. It’s Multi-Age and Mentor-Rich
In 4-H, younger youth grow under the guidance of older teens, and both are supported by trained, caring adult volunteers. Whether it’s in a club, at summer camp, or during a hands-on project, youth are surrounded by positive role models of all ages.
Unlike many youth programs where adults supervise, 4-H adult leaders mentor, coach, and support youth growth over the long term. These volunteers are often parents, teachers, alumni, or community members who care deeply about helping young people succeed.
2. Confidence Through Public Speaking
Public speaking is a regular and celebrated part of the 4-H program. From County Activity Day to state competitions, youth learn how to express themselves clearly and confidently. These skills are transferable to classroom presentations, job interviews, and leadership roles in school clubs and sports.
3. Statewide and National Leadership Opportunities
4-H opens doors across the county, state, and nation. Programs like Electric Congress, NC 4-H Congress, and our career-readiness series “Beyond the Curve” help youth develop independence, professionalism, and lifelong connections.
4. Families Are Part of the Journey
Unlike many drop-off-only programs, 4-H welcomes family involvement. Parents help with projects, volunteer at events, and celebrate their child's growth at every milestone. You're not just a spectator; you're part of the 4-H community.
5. It’s Fun—But It’s Purposeful, Too
We make learning fun through hands-on experiences: crafts, science experiments, canoeing, cooking, robotics, agriculture, and more. But behind every activity is a deeper purpose—building life skills, responsibility, and confidence. It’s meaningful fun that prepares youth for what’s ahead. And unlike seasonal sports or clubs that pause between semesters, 4-H is a year-round activity. Regardless of the time of year, there are opportunities for youth to stay engaged, grow, and take the lead.

A Program That Grows With Your Child—and Their Passions
Whether your child is passionate about athletics, student government, STEM, or the arts—4-H fits in, builds on, and enhances those interests. It’s not about choosing 4-H instead of other programs. It’s about giving your child a strong foundation that supports everything else they love.
4-H does it all—and then goes further. It offers the teamwork of sports, the structure of clubs, the creativity of the arts, and layers it all with leadership, service, life skills, and personal growth. It’s not just another activity to add to your calendar—it’s a community your family can grow with, year after year. Whether your child is outgoing or reserved, new to group settings or already a leader, there’s a place for them here. In 4-H, they don’t just participate—they discover who they are, what they’re good at, and how they can make a difference.
