This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke Center. Our program today is about packing your lunch.

Millions of people across the country pack a lunch to take to work or school for three primary reasons: economics; nutrition and weight management. According to the National Restaurant Association, the average American ages eight and up eats out at least four times a week. Half of those meals are eaten at lunch. Young adults under age 27, eat out as many as 30 times a week! It’s become a lifestyle and many times not a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some tips for planning and packing lunches from home that are thrifty, nutritious, and tasty.

Keep lunch costs low by following these practices.

●      Make an extra serving at dinner to provide lunch the next day.

●      Prepare lunches for the week at one time.

●      Cook large batches of food and freeze in portion-size containers.

●      Buy items in larger packages and package them yourself in reusable containers.

Bringing lunch from home is a time saver. You don’t have to stand in line at the cafeteria, drive to the fast food place or sandwich shop, or wait for your food to be served in a restaurant. That gives you spare time to relax, run errands, take a walk, check email or surf the web.
