Hatching Classroom Projects align with 2nd grade Essential Standard-Structures and Functions of Living Organisms. Children have a natural sense of curiosity about living things in the world around them. Building on this interest, students can develop an understanding of biology through direct experience with living things, their life cycles, and their habitats. Many believe students learn best by interacting with the world – by listening, observing, experimenting and applying their knowledge to real-world situations.
Union County 4-H partners with 2nd-grade teachers to implement this great school enrichment program annually. During the spring season, Union County teachers can request to participate in the embryology program as a loaner program. Embryology is an exciting and fun project for students. This project is not only science, but it also ties into math, writing, and so much more.
The overall embryology program process is about 25 to 30 days depending on start and hatch dates. We hatch chicks who require a 21-day hatching period.
Union County 4-H will work to provide teachers with important details to ensure a safe and great experience during the hatching period.
Below are a few heads-up, in case you were curious about it:
Teachers are NOT responsible for:
- Finding homes for hatched chicks. Union County 4-H has arranged homes prior to the start of the program.
- Picking up and dropping off incubators, eggs, and/or other materials
- Purchasing chicken feed. Union County 4-H provides a bag of chicken feed and shavings.
Teachers ARE responsible for:
- Registering with the 4-H and Livestock Agent and coordinating with other teachers for number of incubators and/or eggs
- Participating in training that lays out the expectations and timelines for this project
- Cleaning and packing up all incubators for pick up by 4-H Team
- Returning all borrowed items (extra feed and/or shavings, cleaned incubators, heat lamp, etc.)
- Completing all evaluation forms for 4-H & Extension reporting purposes
- Reaching out to their administrative team for permission to participate in the program and gain access to the classroom on the weekend (at least one day in the weekend)
