The Currituck County Planes and Plows event, held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, was a huge success! Over 3,000 people attended the event to celebrate Currituck County’s rich history in agriculture and aviation.

The event featured a variety of activities for all ages, including air demonstrations, antique tractors, food trucks, games, airplane rides, displays, contests, and vendors. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn more about Currituck County’s agricultural and aviation industries through educational exhibits and demonstrations. Farmers were celebrated with a complimentary breakfast provided by Craft Aviation and the Currituck Extension Foundation.

Contests and games were another highlight of the event. Winners of the Arts and Crafts division of the Homegrown and Handmade contests included 5-8 year olds Ben Larsen, Anna Moseley, Emerald Cison, and Chris Thomas with various artistic creations. Eli Brown placed first in the 9-13 category with an original painting while Alex Moseley placed second with a handcrafted cutting board. Christina Cison won the adult division with her hand painted gourd and Gloria Roberts received second place honors for her handmade quilt. Amy Larsen won the adult canning contest. In the baked goods division, Emerald Cison and Ben Larsen received honors in the 5-8 year old category while Annie Larsen won the 9-13 year old division. Patsy Smith was crowned “queen of cornbread” for her entry in the cornbread bakeoff contest. Amy Larsen won second place honors.

In the pop up events, Ava and Alan won the youth and adult corn shelling contests clearing their cobs of corn in record time. Adelaide and Jerry were youth and adult champions of the sweet potato pie eating contest. Riley and Derrek showed off their hay bale slinging skills by winning the cloverbud and Jr. Youth division of the hay bale toss while Andrea and Andrew dominated the adult female and male divisions, respectively. Tossing the small cast iron skillet for over 44 feet, Aliya won the youth skillet toss. Christina won the adult female division while Andrew dominated the male division with a toss of nearly 75 feet.

“We were so pleased with the turnout for the Currituck County Planes and Plows event,” said Cameron Lowe, Currituck County Extension Director. “It was a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our rich history in agriculture and aviation. We want to thank everyone who came out to support the event, and we look forward to doing it again next year!”
