and Family Literacy

Somethin’ Pumpkin is a seasonal program that offers fun learning activities for the entire family. It is a collaborative effort of N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cleveland County Library System, Mauney Memorial Library, Cleveland County Extension & Community Association (ECA), and other community partners.

Components of the program include:

Pumpkin decorating contests & reading challenges

Read the contest rules, then complete a registration form for either Mauney Memorial Library (Kings Mountain), Eugenia Y. Young Memorial Library (Shelby),  or Spangler Branch Library (Lawndale) and take the form to the library to pick up your pumpkin. Decorate your pumpkin to portray a character or scene from one of the library’s selected children’s books and return it to the library by the deadline for display, judging, and a chance to win prizes!

Entries from Eugenia Y. Young Memorial Library & Spangler Branch Library…

“We had 26 creative entries this year! Everybody was happy with having more freedom of choice over who/what they could paint, and our display looks so colorful. Overall, this being my first year doing Somethin’ Pumpkin, I was very pleased with the returns.” Deanna Evans, Children’s Librarian at CCLS in Shelby.

  • Fan Favorite: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Pizza Party” by Abigail Porter
  • Librarian’s Honorable Mention: “The Twisted Ones” by Kylie Goins
