National 4-H offers tons of resources and activities ranging from different topics created by 4-Hers. Today, I’d like to share Gardening Tips by Janya Green, 4-H Youth in Action 2020 Agriculture Pillar Winner. Green provides five tips to help your garden flourish this summer.

  1. Use all-purpose soil when starting off your garden!
  2. Spring a small amount of Epsom salt on the root of your tomatoes to replenish the magnesium sulfate in the soil. In other words, you’ll have a sweeter and tastier tomato.
  3. The best time to water is early morning or late evening. Watering during the heat of the day can cause problems for your crops.
  4. If you have animals near or around you, it is good to put up a fence to keep them out. For example, if you have chickens, put up chicken wire to keep them from eating your crops.
  5. To add moisture back into your soil, use a compost or manure. The smell may bother you, but your crops will appreciate it.
