Pest Control in the Fields

Southern green stinkbug on soybeans

With corn coming out of the field, it is easy to forget about pest control in your soybeans that are still in the field. It is important to remember that stink bugs in particular can impact your soybeans late in the season. Recent light trap insect counts have indicated that stink bug populations are increasing. These stink bugs have piercing-sucking mouthparts that will put a hole through the soybean pod and cause damage to the bean. NC State Specialist Dominic Reisig warns growers in a recent article to continue scouting and use the established thresholds until growth stage R6.5, or when the soybeans begin separating from the pod wall. The threshold to use for scouting with a sweep net is 5 stink bugs per 15 sweeps.
