From the time you’re born, your relationships help you learn to navigate the world. You learn how to interact with others, express yourself, conduct everyday health habits, and be a part of different communities from those around you. Social wellness, or well-being, can be defined as one’s ability to effectively interact with those around him/herself and to create a support system that includes friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and others. Social wellness fosters a connection with those individuals, while contributing to one’s sense of belonging – which is important for optimal wellness.

Here are some tips for connecting with others:
  • Make connections - Join a group focused on a favorite hobby, such as reading, hiking, or painting. You can also volunteer for community service events, such as cleaning up the park or community garden.
  • Take care of yourself while helping others - This can include eating healthy food and exercising when possible. This can also mean asking for help to avoid spreading yourself too thin.
  • Bond with your kids - Give children meaningful jobs at home and positive recognition afterward. Help them improve their skills one step at a time.
  • Build healthy relationships - Share your feelings honestly. Ask for what you need from others. Listen to others without judgment or blame. Be caring and empathetic.
