What is 4-H

4-H kids laughing

4-H is America’s largest youth development organization, with over 7 million young people. 4-H is best identified by its green four leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four H’s on the emblem stand for head, heart, hands, and health. 4-H is the first experience many youth have with higher education.

In 4-H youth build life skills by leading and participating in hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture, and civic engagement, helping youth gain confidence, independence and compassion.

Youth who participate in 4-H are:

  • 4X more likely to contribute to their community
  • 3X more likely to participate in community service
  • 2x more likely to live with purpose
  • 2x more likely to be ready for life’s challenges
  • 2x more likely to make healthy choices
  • 2x more likely to participate in STEM activities

The purpose of a 4-H club is to provide positive youth development opportunities and to meet the needs of your people to experience belonging, mastery, independence and generosity.

Teams

A 4-H team is a short-term group formed specifically for competitions, and members can either come from within an existing 4-H club or participate independently outside of a club setting. These teams focus on preparing for events like judging contests, skillathons, or presentations to develop specialized skills and compete at a high level. Whether part of a club or formed independently, 4-H teams provide opportunities for teamwork, skill-building, and personal growth through the competitive experience.
