Fitting in Movement During the Holidays

Running Up Steps
With busy schedules, especially during the holiday season, it can be difficult to prioritize physical activity during the week. However, it is still just as important. Here are some helpful tips to include movement during the holiday season:
  • Include your family or friends: Suggest a family walk after dinner or walk around the room, do squats, or stretches during TV commercial breaks
  • All movement does not have to “look” like a workout.
    • Park further away from store entrances when shopping or running errands
    • Opt to take the stairs instead of elevators.
    • Household chores contribute to your physical activity minutes.
  • Set up a family challenge.
    • Smart phones and tracking devices can be used to challenge family members (or friends) to a step challenge. Include a prize for a winner and bring out the competitive side for more motivation.
  • Think outside the gym.
    • Just because you may not be able to get to the gym doesn’t mean that you’re out of luck when it comes to your workout. Remember that walking, shopping, swimming, and hanging Christmas/holiday decorations all involve being active.
Every day and every week does not have to be perfect. Do what you can to add in a little more movement throughout your day and plan for longer bouts of activity as your schedule allows. The important thing is to keep moving!
