What is the Extension Master Food Volunteer Program?
The Extension Master Food Volunteer (EMFV) Program is a new opportunity launching soon in Union County through NC State Extension. The program is designed for individuals who want to give back to their communities through food and nutrition education.
Volunteers will be trained to support N.C. Cooperative Extension programs in areas like:
-
Nutrition and healthy eating
-
Food safety
-
Cooking skills and demonstrations
-
Local food systems
-
Teaching strategies
-
And more!
Upon completing training, EMFVs will assist with programs such as cooking demos, health fair outreach, and youth education—all designed to promote healthier lifestyles and connect people to local food.
Who Can Become a Master Food Volunteer?
The EMFV program is open to adults who are passionate about food, health, and helping others. You don’t need to be a professional chef or nutritionist—just someone with a love for learning and a desire to give back.
Ideal volunteers are:
-
Comfortable speaking to groups or interacting with the public
-
Interested in cooking, nutrition, or public health
-
Willing to commit time to training and community service
-
Team-oriented and excited to learn!
No previous volunteer or nutrition experience is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to serve!
What Will Volunteers Do?
As a certified Master Food Volunteer, you’ll have opportunities to:
-
Lead or assist with cooking demonstrations at farmers’ markets, food pantries, and events
-
Support educational booths at health fairs, festivals, and school functions
-
Help Extension staff deliver youth and adult food education programs across the county
This is a great way to build your skills, meet like-minded people, and make a lasting impact in Union County.
When is Training?

We will hold an informational meeting to share more about the program, the training timeline, and the application process.
