As the weather turns warmer, more folks will be out walking. Walking is a great way to exercise and stay in shape. Here are a few safety tips to follow when walking:

  • When no sidewalk is available, always walk facing the traffic when walking on the road. In North America, you should always walk on the left side of the road. In the event that you need to evade a vehicle, walking on the side facing the traffic will give you the best chance to actually see the vehicle coming towards you.
  • Look both ways before crossing the road. Cross the street only when you have the pedestrian crossing light. Make eye contact with drivers who may be turning.
  • Be aware of bikers and runners. Listen out for bike bell’s or “passing on left/right” shout outs. Form a single file, if walking in pairs, and allow them to pass.
  • Wear visible clothing. Bright clothing in the daytime and reflective light-colored clothing in the evening.
  • Keep the volume down when listening to music. The level should be where you can still hear bike bells and warnings from other walkers or runners.
  • Don’t get distracted by texting and chatting. Distractions can lead to accidents such as tripping and falling. Criminals may also see you as an easy target.
  • Know when to stop walking. Learn the symptoms of heat sickness, stroke, heart attack, and dehydration. The hydration rule is to drink water when thirsty.
