Cool weather means that we will be turning on the heat to keep warm and cozy. During this time of the year, there are more house fires. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe.
- Change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. A good time to do this is when you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
- Make sure your fire extinguishers are charged completely and are working.
- If you heat your home with gas, have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home.
- Have your central heating system cleaned, inspected, and serviced by a certified heating, venting and air conditioning, (HVAC) contractor.
If you use space heaters follow these simple rules:
- Do not store combustible items near heater.
- Turn heaters off when you go to bed.
- Do not place heaters near clothing, furniture or curtains.
- Leave at least 3 feet of empty space surrounding the heater.
We all love the glow of a warm fireplace, follow these tips to keep safe and warm:
- Keep combustibles at least 3 feet away from the fireplace.
- Never use gasoline to start a fire.
- Hire a chimney sweep to clean out your chimney every fall.
- Repair any cracks that may be in your fireplace.
- Use fireplace screens to contain sparks and fire debris.
- Get lines and connections inspected before using a natural gas fireplace.
